In my opinion, books are the best accessory.

Styling Librarian Special Request: Spanish Book Authors

When I presented at my school district’s literacy conference, a teacher came up and asked me to recommend some authors and illustrators for her bilingual classroom. I asked her to email me since I was addressing so many people… here was her request:

“If you could pass along any advice about finding and acquiring books in Spanish for my third graders, I would very much appreciate it. I expect their levels may be all over the spectrum and their interests, just as varied. The only resource I have so far is the Pura Belpré winners list. I have found other lists of books translated into Spanish but originally the books were written in English. I would love to fill my shelves with Spanish speaking authors.”

Here was my response:

There are two book order cataloging systems available:

This looks like a lovely list of books:
Authors who write in Spanish… I thought this list of authors looked promising:
plus this one:
I like Reading Rockets and appreciated this list of books, think only a few were originally in Spanish:
There’s a beautiful author located here in Oregon who writes biographies and stories in Spanish and English as well. She’s incredible. I had her visit my school years ago and was overwhelmed… some of her biographies are quite mature. She writes about a person through poetry and each one is really powerful and inspiring. Her name is Carmen Bernier Grande and I’d highly recommend looking into her books…
The SLJ’s  Resources for Finding Latino Kid Lit  (2013) webpage shows book awards associated with prominent writers of Latino children’s literature. These include the Pura Belpre Awards, Tomas Rivera Book Awards, and the Americas Awards Book Award for Children’s and Young Adult Literature.
At the bottom of SLJ’s webpage is a list of “Popular and Award-Wining Latino Authors/Illustrators.”I know you already mentioned Pura Belpre but there might be good ones also below:

Special note from my knowledgeable friend:
Note from Jen:

The late Dr. Isabel Schon authored a series called Recommended Books in Spanish for Children and Young Adults. I think the most recent edition covered 2004-2008; the copy in the Oregon State Library collection can be ILLed in Oregon. Many of the books reviewed in the reference work were originally published in Spanish.

Those are older titles, but it seems that the Isabel Schon International Center for Spanish Books for Youth at the San Diego Public Library has a database of “high-quality books in Spanish for children and adolescents published around the world as well as noteworthy books in English about Latinos.”
