In my opinion, books are the best accessory.
So honored to have the chance to interview the fantastically talented Lisa Yee! She’s one of my favorite authors and so many of my students have been touched by her work! I love The Kidney Hypothetical – or how to ruin your life in seven days- new book that she mentions down below… wait til you read it! My review of The Kidney Hypothetical – or how to ruin your life in seven days will be shared on Saturday.
What was your favorite childhood book memory?
I can recall being little and my mother reading to me in bed at night. It was such a lovely and comforting feeling, being held close, and the book right there, and my mother’s voice. This memory I hoped to repeat every night when I used to read to my children when they were young.
Yes! I judged the PEN USA Awards, so there were dozens of books I read for that. And I helped select NPR’s Best Children’s/YA Books for 2014. There were so many great ones last year, but looking forward to 2015, I managed to get an Advanced Reader’s Copy of Jeanne Birdsall’s THE PENDERWICKS IN SPRING — I absolutely loved it. In fact, I started reading slower because I didn’t want it to end.
Are you in a writers group? If so, has it helped you?
I am not in a writers’ group. However, I do meet with a bunch of other writers at a coffee shop twice a month, and we write in the vicinity of each other, but don’t share our work. This public spectacle shames me into writing because I know that they would be able to see if I were on Facebook.
Do you have a key writing tips for kids? Or adults?
Get something down on the page. Anything. It’s easier to rewrite than it is to write.
The Kidney Hypothetical – or how to ruin your life in seven days, is my next Young Adult novel! It will release in March 2015, and I’m so excited about it. It’s been a while since I’ve written YA, so it’s great to return to it.
*Do you have any favorite topping you like on your pizza?
Hmmmm . . . I’d say spicy sausage, or even . . . anchovies!
