The Styling Librarian

In my opinion, books are the best accessory.

Styling Librarian Saturday Book Share Ivan the Remarkable

”Pull up a chair, it’s a Saturday Book Share”.

Here’s to celebrating books that strike my fancy every week!

Ivan the Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla by Katherine Applegate, illustrated by G. Brian Karas – Non-Fiction Picture Book- How absolutely gorgeous and beautiful this book is! It is one of those perfect stand alone books or a beautiful accompanyment to The One and Only Ivan. I loved reading this book and sobbing on my own. I loved reading this book with my son and discussing humans and their treatment of animals. I loved hearing out of his mouth what I was thinking about how people weren’t knowledgeable and exploited animals, and are still doing so, for years… This is one of those gorgeous books that can be read at the beginning of a discussion on the impact humans make on the environment, how we impact others. One of those perfect PYP connected books as well. Wow. So thrilled to add this book to my library’s collection.

Goodreads Summary: “In a spare, powerful text and evocative illustrations, the Newbery medalist Katherine Applegate and the artist G. Brian Karas present the extraordinary real story of a special gorilla.
Captured as a baby, Ivan was brought to a Tacoma, Washington, mall to attract shoppers. Gradually, public pressure built until a better way of life for Ivan was found at Zoo Atlanta. From the Congo to America, and from a local business attraction to a national symbol of animal welfare, Ivan the Shopping Mall Gorilla traveled an astonishing distance in miles and in impact.
This is his true story and includes photographs of Ivan in the back matter.”

About Pull up a chair, it’s a Saturday Book Share: I’ve had many books I review that I just want to feature. Simple and easy, celebrate a new book encounter. So that’s what Saturday Book Share is about for me, celebrating books! Perhaps some days I’ll share the book with a short reading of a portion. Or perhaps other days I’ll just share a glimpse of the book.
