In my opinion, books are the best accessory.

Styling Librarian Saturday Book Share Descent into Overworld

Recently, I was contacted by the author Liam O’Donnell who was releasing a new Minecraft novel called Descent into Overworld. I decided that it would be wise to read and review this book with my son at my side since his is a huge Minecraft fan and would be able to explain things I wouldn’t understand otherwise. Worked out well since he was able to be the knowledgeable one which leads to a special time together.

Here are my thoughts on Descent into Overworld – Battle of the Blocks #1 – by Liam O’Donnell:

Readers are immediately drawn into a school scene which is hosting the first ever Minecraft convention for their town. There is a very flexible teacher who runs a Minecraft group after school with limits as to the amount of students who can be part of the group, three. The school has a very negative principal who is more concerned about homework and test scores versus student individual growth and interests. There are quite exciting action scenes that quickly begin the story which has the three Minecraft group members meet a mysterious guest at the Minecraft convention who gives them some special swords. When the magic and adventure begin it is quite exciting and a little mine-stretching. Minecraft’s characters enter Earth for some great action scenes and then our main characters are thrown into Minecraft’s Overworld with different adventures, moments of creative survival, and fantastic situations. This will be quite a popular book with readers, especially players of Minecraft. I personally enjoyed reading the book aloud with my son and found that it was an interesting story and easy read aloud.
Warning, this book leaves you hanging at the end, don’t expect a conclusion.

Here are my son’s thoughts on Descent into Overworld:

Official summary about Descent into Overworld:

“Who knew a foam sword could end the world?
Hamid, Ant and Jaina love dodging homework, fighting creepers and creating epic builds in Minecraft. When a mysterious stranger gives them four foam swords, the three friends and their videogame-hating principal are thrown into their favorite game and thrust into an epic battle to save Minecraft.
An army of Minecraft monsters threatens to escape the game and rampage across the real world, destroying neighborhoods, terrorizing families and giving videogames a bad name once and for all.
Together, Hamid and his friends must harness the powers of their swords to stop the horde of zombies, skeletons and creepers. But first, they must catch their school principal before he makes a deal with the darkest forces in Minecraft to destroy the blocky game once and for all.
Grab your pickaxe, the Battle for Minecraft has just begun . . .”
